It's been two months since Kai Monahan's life changed forever. Retrieved from a suddenly unsafe Colorado by Rhys and taken to Eryri, the dragons' home in the South Pacific, she lives a secret existence. Rhys—for all his awe-inspiring power—is afraid to reveal to his people that he's heartsworn to a human. One he's quite possibly in love with.

Kai hasn't forgotten the terror or pain of the moment Rhys first took control of her mind and her magic, but neither has she forgotten the fire of his kiss. When she's discovered, dragon politics—not to mention spies and ex-lovers—threaten her growing feelings. Rhys has more enemies than he can guess, and someone close to him is playing right into their hands.

The war Rhys never wanted is coming. For either of them to survive, Kai must open her mind to him as never before. This time, there will be no turning back.

DISCLAIMER: if you haven't read "Soul of Smoke", you might want to skip this review because I will likely include spoilers for it!

I thoroughly enjoyed the first "Dragonsworn" book and thus had high expectations for this one too, and Caitlyn McFarland did not disappoint! I'm not going to go into a plot summary because that's what the blurb's for, so I'll just talk about my feelings.

I adore Kai and Rhys, especially together. It really tugged at my heartstrings to see the angst they go through because of Rhys's position as the king and the political crap he has to worry about. I really felt Kai's loneliness during the first portion of the book, when she is keeping Rhys out of her head, and I just wanted to grab her by the shoulders, shake her, and tell her, "Stop pushing him away! Can't you see he LOVES YOU?" So naturally it made me really happy when that wall finally came down.

Speaking of Kai's and Rhys's romance, they do eventually sleep together, but there is nothing explicit about the scene and it happens after they are officially married, so I had absolutely no objection to it. It was actually a really wonderful depiction of the kind of loving, intimate relationship a husband and wife should have, and it left me with a happy glow inside. I applaud you, Caitlyn McFarland, for handling it so well.

It wasn't all kittens and rainbows, though. There were some really tense moments in this book--like when Morwenna dragged Kai in front of the Council claiming she was the traitor they'd been looking for, only for Rhys to admit that she was his heartsworn... Or the moment when Owain's assassin nearly succeeded in offing Kai before she made it back to Eryri... Or when we, the readers, got to see into the real traitor's mind before any of the characters found out who it was--the dramatic irony was killing me! There was never a moment when I was bored with the story; there was always something interesting going on.

You know what was really awesome, though? The way the various plot threads came together at the end for the big climax. There's a character who we don't see much pulling strings in the background, and by spreading misinformation she manipulates pretty much every other character into doing what she wants to try to put her preferred heir on the throne. With a plot like this, you can tell Caitlyn McFarland thought it out very well.

Be warned, though: the end of this book is an awfully heart-wrenching cliffhanger, which is why I am VERY VERY glad that book 3 will be released before too long! Can't wait to read the conclusion to the "Dragonsworn" trilogy, "Truth of Embers"! I trust it will be every bit as worthy of a sequel as "Shadow of Flame."

Shadow of Flame Dragonsworn Book 2 eBook Caitlyn McFarland Reviews

This book is so fantastic.
I've never liked dragons untill I read this trilogy. It is so visual and heart gripping! Now to start book three...
Made me fall in love with dragons all over again.
Absolutely gripping read. So well paced and entertaining with unexpected plot twists and some great romance. Plus, dragons. Highly recommend.
Zoomed thru the first one, then swallowed this one whole. I can't stop, starting next one NOW. (Guess I liked it.) 😸
This is the second book of the series. It is a building up for the three book, the story line is weaker than the first one since the surprise was out in the first book.
Lived up to my expectations! There was a lot of lovely character development and some unexpected plot twists! I can't wait for Book 3 to see how everything wraps up!
